| Randonneuring is basically unsupported long-distance
cycling. Events are timed and are run along a specific route which riders must follow.
Completion of the event, on course and within the specified time limits is the goal. The rider
may face many challenges during an event including bad weather, navigation, mechanicals, and one's
own physical abilities. Riders are expected to be prepared for whatever they may encounter during
their event and to meet these challenges. This style of riding is non-competitive, where
determination and self-sufficiency often rule the day. Support is not provided at most events.
Instead, riders must rely on what they have brought with them or what support they can find along
the way. The Randonneur sets aside competition in favor of comraderie at these events. Helping a
fellow rider is considered a very fine thing to do! All riders who complete an event, regardless
of time are measured equally, with results listed alphabetically. The long distances and
independence of this type of cycling allows riders to see just how much is possible for them. |
